Health Matters: Learning about the Seven Chakras

We are surrounded by energy and it is absorbed into the body through the seven energy centers called "Chakra's." Each of the main chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being. Since everything is constantly moving, it's essential that our chakras stay open, aligned, and fluid. If there's a blockage, energy cannot flow and causes an imbalance in the physical body which can create disease and/or other negative manifestations, leaving the body feeling drained, fatigued, and emotionally distressed. When they are in balance, the body can then enjoy good health and well-being.

First Chakra is the Root chakra

The symbol of the root chakra is composed of a four-petaled lotus flower, often stylized as a circle with four petals with a downward-pointing triangle. The downward-pointing triangle is a symbol of spirit connecting with matter, grounding on the earth and our earthly existence, in our bodies. It’s seen as the center of our vital life force and is the seat where kundalini (the arising of an energy and consciousness which has been coiled at the base of the spine since birth and is the source of the life that everyone knows). The force stays coiled, dormant until it wakes up to distribute its energy through all the other chakras.

This chakra is about your history, your traditions, how you were raised. It speaks to how safe you feel in the world. Its energy primarily affects the health of your legs and physical strength, the kidneys, adrenal glands, colon, legs, bones, and spinal column, It also affects the hip joints, the base of the spine and overlaps pelvis areas. It is the center through which we experience: grounding to material world, basic instinct, security, "fight or flight", will to live. When blocked: insecurity, anger, fear, greed, constipation, unworthiness, no vitality, violence, spinal tension, kidney problems, arthritis, leg problems can occur.
